Chapter 15

San Francisco

Seated at the restaurant manager’s desk with his headset in place, Agent Cooper made some fine adjustments to his monitoring equipment to ensure optimal results. The video feed from the wireless, magnetically mounted overhead camera flowed smoothly to his open laptop, at a seamless capture rate. Cooper was able control the camera’s positioning from his computer’s mouse. The miniature camera, which represented the latest in micro-technology, was also capable of audio recording, though it lacked the Infinity Bugs’ acute sensitivity. Given that the setting was busy restaurant, it would normally be a challenge to capture every spoken word. In order to circumvent the problem, Cooper had selected a translation software, originally designed to help the hearing impaired to read lips. Both the audio and visual transmissions ran through a fully encrypted, undetectable channel used exclusively by United States intelligence services.

While Professor Lin and his guest engaged in small talk, Cooper used the time to manipulate his laptop’s mouse to set the camera at an angle that permitted candid shots of their respective faces. The mounted camera, though tiny in size, was designed to mimic the full range and function of a human eye, and could capture images from multiple angles. His training had taught him that facial expression could reveal as much information as the spoken word. With the equipment fully functional and optimized, Cooper focused in on the conversation. He could see the pair clearly; both were well dressed. The Professor wore a modern, black Italian suit. A heavy, gold Rolex watch hung ostentatiously on his left wrist. His guest wore a conservative, medium length black dress. Cooper detected no visible jewellery except for a long, gold pendant hanging from a simple gold chain around her delicate neck. Her handbag and matching shoes were expensive designer models.

“Dr. Kim, I must say how surprised I was to receive your call. Pleasantly surprised, of course. I’m so glad that you made the trip down from Seattle to see me. But, of course, this visit cannot be for purely social purposes – as lovely as that thought might be. What is it that you want with me?” asked the Professor, cutting directly to the chase.

Looking poised, thought Cooper, Dr. Kim took a sip of water and took a long moment before responding. “I requested this meeting because I have a business proposition for you. I have, in my possession, a very valuable piece of technical information. I believe that it will command a great price – from the right buyer. I also believe you are the perfect conduit for such a transaction. Firstly, because you have the expertise to understand the functionality and importance of such technology. And secondly, because you have the contact base to elicit the best price for it. I would like to explore the possibility of a partnership with you in this most profitable endeavor.”

“The last time we spoke, you were working for an organization with many such contacts. You had a partner. An American, if memory serves.
